Understanding Nodes in Pallet Racking Frames

When inspecting or installing pallet racking, one of the most important structural details to understand is the node. A node is the connection point where different members of the frame — such as the upright, horizontal brace, and diagonal brace — meet. These points are crucial because they transfer loads and stresses through the racking system.

Why Nodes Matter

Every pallet racking frame relies on its bracing system to provide stability. The nodes are where the braces connect to the uprights, forming a rigid, triangulated structure. If a node is damaged, distorted, or poorly fixed, the overall frame strength is compromised.

The First Node — The Critical Connection

The most important node in a pallet racking frame is the first node. This is the connection where the first diagonal brace meets another diagonal brace near the base of the upright.

• This first node must always be installed on the face of the system (facing the aisle).

• The reason is simple: it is the strongest point of the frame, and it’s also the area most exposed to impact damage, usually from forklifts and pallets at ground level.

• By placing the node at the face, the frame gains greater resistance to bending and impact, protecting the structural integrity of the entire bay.

Inspection of Nodes

During a pallet racking inspection, special attention should always be given to nodes, especially the first node:

• Check for bending, twisting, or weld cracks.

• Look for elongation of bolt holes where braces connect.

• Assess for damage from forklifts or pallets at the first node.

• Verify brace alignment — incorrect installation can weaken the structure.

Compliance and Safety

According to AS 4084-2023 (Steel Storage Racking), frames and their connections must be maintained in a condition that ensures full load-bearing capacity. Nodes, being primary stress-transfer points, are directly covered under these requirements. Damage here can quickly make a frame non-compliant and unsafe.
