When it comes to pallet racking safety, signage is not just a formality — it’s a legal and compliance requirement under AS 4084:2023 (Steel Storage Racking). Missing or incorrect signage is one of the most common issues we find during inspections, and it can have serious consequences for both safety and liability.

What the Standard Requires

According to AS 4084:2023, Section 8.2, every run of pallet racking must display a Load Application and Configuration (LAC) sign. These signs provide vital information about the safe use of your racking system, including:

  • The maximum unit load (the maximum weight of each pallet, including goods and pallet)

  • The maximum total bay load (the total weight that can be supported in one bay of racking)

  • The maximum beam load (the allowable load per beam level)

  • The configuration details of the racking (such as beam levels and spacing)

  • The name of the supplier/manufacturer of the racking system

Why Signage Matters

Without correct signage:

  • Staff may unknowingly overload racks, leading to dangerous stress on beams and frames

  • Warehouse managers cannot ensure compliance with AS 4084:2023

  • Liability increases in the event of an accident, as the racking system is technically non-compliant

In many cases, we see signage that is missing, outdated, damaged, or incorrect after changes have been made to the racking configuration.

Common Problems We Find

  • Signs missing altogether

  • Old signs still in place after racks have been reconfigured

  • Load capacities listed incorrectly or missing key details

  • Handwritten notes on signs instead of certified data

Staying Compliant

To remain compliant with AS 4084:2023:

  • Every run of racking must have a clearly visible, durable, and accurate LAC sign

  • Signs must reflect the current configuration — if beams are moved or bays are adjusted, the signage must be updated

  • Only the racking supplier or a qualified engineer can provide the correct load ratings

How We Help...

At Pallet Racking Inspections, we don’t just check if signage is present — we check if it’s accurate and compliantwith the current system setup. If updates are needed, we provide clear advice and can arrange for new signage to be supplied and installed.
