In every pallet racking system, the frames (or uprights) are the backbone that carry the weight of your entire warehouse operation. If the frames are compromised, the whole structure is at risk. That’s why during inspections, frame damage is one of the most serious issues we look for.

What Are Frames?

Pallet racking frames are the vertical uprights that support the horizontal beams. Together, they:

  • Transfer loads safely into the warehouse floor

  • Provide stability to the racking structure

  • Withstand forklift impacts, pallet loading, and daily warehouse activity

Common Problems Found in Frames

During inspections, the most frequent issues we see include:

  • Dents, twists, or buckling from forklift impacts

  • Corrosion or rust that weakens the steel over time

  • Bent or damaged bracing members between uprights

  • Baseplate damage or loose anchor bolts at the bottom of frames

  • Frames out of plumb or alignment from uneven loading or floor settlement

Even small amounts of damage can reduce the load capacity of a frame and make the racking unsafe.

What the Standards Require

Under AS 4084:2023 (Steel Storage Racking):

  • Frames must remain within strict deflection and alignment tolerances

  • Damaged frames must be assessed and repaired or replaced promptly

  • Uprights must always be securely anchored to the floor with approved fixings

If a frame is bent, twisted, or unstable, the entire racking system is considered non-compliant and unsafe for use.

Why Frames Must Be Protected

When frames are damaged:

  • Load capacity is reduced, increasing the risk of collapse

  • The racking becomes non-compliant with Australian Standards

  • Staff safety is directly compromised

  • Insurance and liability risks increase dramatically in the event of an incident

How to Stay Safe

  • Use rack protectors and guards in high-traffic areas to reduce impact damage

  • Carry out regular informal checks for dents, bends, or corrosion

  • Book formal inspections to measure frame deflection against AS 4084:2023 requirements

  • Replace damaged uprights immediately — repairs should never be improvised on site

How We Can Help...

At Pallet Racking Inspections, we carefully assess every frame for damage, alignment, and anchoring. Our inspection reports identify whether damage is within tolerances or if immediate action is required. We also provide practical solutions to bring your system back to compliance and keep your warehouse safe.
