Pallet racking beams are the horizontal members that connect to the upright frames and directly carry pallet loads. They are one of the most critical components in any racking system, and any damage or misuse can quickly compromise both safety and compliance.

What Beams Do

Premium Pallet Racking Beams

Beams are designed to:

  • Support pallet loads across each storage level

  • Transfer weight safely into the frames and down to the floor

  • Maintain the overall strength and stability of the racking system

Because they bear the weight of your stock, beams must always be kept in good condition and installed with proper locking devices.

Common Problems Found in Beams

During inspections, the most frequent issues we uncover include:

  • Bent or deflected beams caused by overloading

  • Damaged beam connectors from forklift impacts during loading

  • Missing or damaged safety clips (beam locks)

  • Corrosion or rust reducing beam strength

  • Mismatched or unapproved beams used as replacements

  • Beams sitting at incorrect levels compared to the approved configuration

Even minor beam deflection is a warning sign that the racking may be overloaded or damaged.

What the Standards Require

Under AS 4084:2023 (Steel Storage Racking):

  • Beams must not exceed the maximum allowable deflection limits

  • All beams must be fitted with locking devices supplied by the manufacturer

  • Beams must match the approved system design — using unapproved or mixed components is non-compliant

  • Load signage must reflect the correct beam load capacity

If any beam is damaged, overloaded, or missing its locking device, the racking system is considered unsafe to use.

Why Beams Matter for Safety

When beams are compromised:

  • Pallets can slip or fall from storage levels

  • The load-bearing capacity of the rack is reduced

  • Forklift operators and warehouse staff are placed at risk

  • The racking system may partially or fully collapse

How to Stay Safe

  • Never exceed the stated beam load capacity shown on signage

  • Ensure all beams are fitted with manufacturer-approved safety clips

  • Replace damaged or bent beams immediately — never attempt repairs

  • Arrange regular inspections to confirm beams are within safe deflection limits
