Can You Install Your Own Pallet Racking?

One of the most common questions we’re asked is whether clients can install their own pallet racking. The short answer is yes — you can — but there are some very important conditions.

According to the Australian Standards (AS 4084-2023 for Steel Storage Racking), racking must be installed correctly and safely to ensure it can carry the intended loads. This means that if you choose to install racking yourself, you must be confident that the installation is done in line with the standards.

However, even if you install the racking yourself, a professional inspection is still required before the system can be certified for use. This ensures that the installation meets complian

ce requirements and that your staff and stock remain safe.


Why We Recommend Professional Installation

While it is possible to install pallet racking yourself, we highly recommend having your racking installed by the supplier or a qualified installer. Here’s why:

  • You can be confident it has been installed correctly.

  • You’ll avoid unnecessary downtime caused by rework or failed inspections.

  • If installed by a professional, your first required inspection won’t be for 12 months, instead of immediately.

  • Racking installed too close to walls, restricting safe clearances.

  • Incorrect or uneven levelling of frames.

  • Beams installed at the wrong heights, affecting load capacity and stability.

  • Frame guards either missing or fitted incorrectly.

  • Insufficient base plate anchors — or the wrong type altogether.
