Formal or Informal Inspection?
Informal Inspections:
An Informal Inspection is a regular in-house check carried out by site personnel or warehouse staff. It is less detailed and not necessarily documented in a formal report. These are typically done:
-
Weekly or Monthly, depending on warehouse activity
-
To identify obvious damage like bent frames, missing pins, or dislodged beams
-
As part of a proactive maintenance routine
-
To trigger urgent corrective action or escalate issues to management
While informal inspections don’t replace a formal inspection, they are a critical part of ongoing safety and help prevent small issues from becoming serious hazards.
Formal Inspections:
A Formal Pallet Racking Inspection is a scheduled, documented assessment conducted by a qualified professional with experience in the racking industry—such as a manufacturer, installer, or supplier. This inspection is typically done annually, in line with Australian Standard AS 4084:2023, and includes:
-
A detailed visual inspection of all accessible Pallet Racking components
-
Risk classification using a traffic light system (Green, Orange, Red)
-
Written report including photos, compliance status, and repair recommendations
-
Review of racking history, load signage, previous maintenance, and environmental conditions
-
A Certificate of Compliance (if the system meets all requirements)
This type of inspection is required for legal and insurance compliance and should be kept on file.
